Complete, original disbound issue in near fine condition showing slight wear to spine and light fading nly. This issue features two illustrations by Thomas Nast. One is a two-page, pro-Grant spread showing Lady Columbia with her hand covering her eyes and the other resting on a piece of paper with the message, "'Had I but served my God with half the zeal I served my country, He would not in mine age have left me naked to mine enemies.'" The caption below is "Grant's Last Annual Message. Columbia. 'I did not think to shed a tear in all my miseries; but thou hast forced me out of thy honest truth to play the woman.'--Shakespeare." Another related illustration (full-page) shows a Caesar-like figure falling on a sword labeled "Sensations" and "Scares." The caption reads, "'Caesar, now by still.'" Two quotes follow, one from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar: "Brutus. 'O Julius Caesar, thou art mighty yet!.'" The other a quote from U.S. Grant: "'With the present Congress my official life terminates. It is not probable that public affairs will ever again receive attention from me further than as a citizen of the Republic, always taking a deep interest in the honor, integrity, and prosperity of the whole land.'"
