This copy contains the small bookplate of Lorenzo Bull, a distinguished early citizen of Quincy, Illinois. This volume of the magazine features articles on the efficacy of quarantine in pandemics and the nascent Transcontinental Railroad ("The Pacific Railway"). There is also an essay by a committee of unnamed Southerners who argue for the creation of a "Southern Rights and Union Congress," designed to protect Southern commercial interests and states' rights. They include a proposed constitution for such an organization.
