Author: Thomas Ingoldsby Title: The Jackdaw of Rheims
Description: London, Richard Bentley, 1870. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. 43p. A thin hardcover book bound in gilt-decorated green cloth with gilt edges. Very good condition overall. Edges lightly worn and air bubbles forming under cloth on back cover. Blotchy foxing on most pages; otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. A story told in verse about a bird that finds its way into the Cathedral at Rheims and makes all manner of mischief, including snatching the Cardinal's ring and assisting with confessions, culminating in its farcical canonization as a "saint." As an anti-Catholic work, this fable satirizes the Church hierarchy, the sacrament of Penance, and the naming of saints. Illustrated with 12 color chromolithographs. Very Good .
