The author was a Prussian-born Reform Jewish rabbi who founded the National Farm School (what is today Delaware Valley University) in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. In this book, he reflects on the famous Passion Play that is traditionally staged in Bavaria (and regarded by some as anti-Semitic) and also offers his theological criticisms of Christianity.
