Elder served as Bishop of Natchez during the American Civil War, and was later made Archbishop of Cincinnati. During the Union occupation of Natchez, the military commanders tried to require demonstrations of allegiance to the Union in all religious services, including Masses said in Elder's diocese. Elder resisted, and was even temporarily jailed, but insisted on the right of the Church to celebrate its liturgy without government interference. This journal of Elder's daily life during the war deals in part with his perspective of the controversy. Undated first edition, ca. 1960s. Good .
