Title: Letters to a Prebendary: Being an Answer to Reflections on Popery, by the Rev. J. Sturges, LL. D. Prebendary and Chancellor of Winchester, and Chaplain to His Majesty. With Remarks on the Opposition of Hoadlyism to the Doctrines of the Church of England
Description: Baltimore, Bernard Dornin, 1810. First American Edition. Leather_bound. 400p. A small brown leather book in good condition. Edges and corners worn; hinges a bit weak but secure for normal handling. Text clean. A book by an English Catholic bishop who fought for Catholic emancipation; in this book he defends Catholicism against critiques by an Anglican "prebendary," or clergyman. He then seeks to establish common ground with Anglicans by joining their condemnation of Hoadlyism, a theory by controversial clergyman Benjamin Hoadly. Hoadly argued that there was no biblical authority to establish a church hierarchy, because of Jesus' claim that the Kingdom of God is not of this world. This argument over Church polity became known as the Bangorian Controversy. Anglicans and Catholics would ultimately both reject Hoadlyism, as both recognize earthly leaders of their respective churches, one the monarch of England and the other the pope. Good .
