In the book, Butler praises Mexico's first indigenous president, Benito Juarez, and his anti-clericalism stance against the interference of Catholic France in Mexico's government. France installed Emperor Maximilian I in opposition to Juarez in 1864, and Maximilian received the blessing of Pope Pius IX. Juarez and the Republicans regained power and had Maximilian executed.
