Giordano Bruno was a Dominican friar-turned-Calvinist and pioneer of Copernican cosmology who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1600 during the Roman Inquisition. There is a dispute as to whether Bruno's scientific or theological views were the primary impetus for his execution. This is the first English translation of Bruno's controversial text, titled "Lo spaccio de la bestia trionfante" in the original Italian. Translator Arthur Imerti's appreciation for Italian literature and Bruno's work was instilled from youth by his father, yet his academic work may have been considered particularly relevant as concerns about Catholic political and intellectual censure resurged around the 1960 election of President John F. Kennedy. Good .
