Title: Jack Johnson -- in the Ring -- and out
Description: Chicago, National Sports Publishing Company, 1927. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. 259p. A hardcover book in very good condition with a like dustjacket. Light stain at bottom of front cover, affecting the same area of the front free endpaper. Pages lightly toned with age, but otherwise, text clean and binding tight. The jacket has some light edge wear and faint speckling on the spine and back panel. Otherwise intact and protected in a mylar cover. Much nicer condition than is normally found! The memoirs of the first African-American to hold the world heavyweight boxing title. Features multiple introductions, including one by author Damon Runyon, and illustrated with numerous black and white plates. Johnson was a highly controversial sports figure of his day. The first Black man to become the heavyweight boxing champion, he was roundly hated by the White public and sparked the cry for a "Great White Hope" to dethrone him. Johnson relished tormenting his detractors both by dominating the White fighters sent to defeat him and by creating public ire by wearing flamboyent clothing and jewelry and by marrying a White woman. Very Good .
