Spine is faded, chipped at the top, and starting to split along the front edge. Corners worn and bent. Faint label residue at bottom of spine; old labels and stamps inside. Foxing throughout, but text otherwise unmarked, and binding tight. Scarce book by Ohio publisher William Turner Coggeshall (1824-1867), who served as an unofficial bodyguard for Abraham Lincoln during his presidency. As a newspaper reporter and representative of the Ohio governor at Lincoln's first inauguration, Coggeshall intermittently acted as the president's bodyguard and was present on the platform with Lincoln when the latter delivered the Gettysburg Address. Coggeshall spoke to Lincoln in person on the day he was shot, but had left Washington to return to Ohio shortly before Lincoln's fateful visit to Ford's Theatre. Fair .
