Description: New York, P.J. Kenedy & Sons, 1936. First English Language Edition. Hardcover. 403p. A burgundy cloth hardcover book in good condition. Edges rubbed; head and foot of spine worn. Spine is also lightly sunned. Corners lightly bumped and rubbed. A couple tiny flecks of white paint at bottom of front cover. Front free endpaper has been torn out; owner's signature on blank side of frontispiece. Inch-long closed tear at top of page 33, and small crumpled tear on side of page 53; neither tear affects the text. Pleates foxed; otherwise clean and tight. A scarce biography of Jeanne Fontbonne (1759-1843), a nun who formed the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyons from the remnants of religious sisters dispersed by the French Revolution. She was slated for death at the guillotine, but was saved because the fall of Robespierre occurred the day before her scheduled execution. This book is illustrated with black and white plates. Good .
