Description: Paris/Lyon, Mequignon Fils Aine/Perisse Freres, 1818. Second Edition. Leather. 197p. A hardcover book bound in 3/4 golden-brown leather with black cloth boards. Good reading condition. Edges of spine worn and leather generally scuffed, but binding is still tight. Old convent bookplate and stamp inside. Pages lightly foxed, but otherwise, text clean. Text in French. An early account of the Rochefort Martyrs --- Catholic clergymen who were deported from France and held aboard prison ships during the French Revolution. Most of the prisoners died; they were collectively beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995. This copy of the book belonged to Archbishop John B. Purcell of Cincinnati (1800-1883), whose faint pencil signature is on the half-title page. Fair .
