Title: Original Typed Manuscript for Robert Leckie's Wwii Catholic Novel "Ordained
Description: Boston, Little, Brown & Co, 1969. Original Maunscript. The original manuscript for Leckie's novel about a young man ordained a priest in Depression-Era New Jersey who becomes a Marine Corps chaplain during World War Two. This group includes the typed manuscript with extensive corrections throughout, probably by the editor at the book's publisher Little Brown and Co. The corrections include numerous typos and grammatical errors. Certain paragraphs are edited for style while other corrections are changes made to the names of characters or places. The biggest editorial changes occur in Leckie's depiction of the book's more brutal incidents during the fighting for Guadalcanal. The editor chose to tone down Leckie's accounts of deaths in combat and the martyrdom of a group of missionaries, clearly attempting to make the novel a bit less harrowing. Also included are both the original page proofs and the final galley proofs. Published in 1969, Ordained seems not to have gathered much attention. Leckie is best-known today for his military history books and his memoirs of service with the US Marines during World War Two. His most famous work is Helmet for My Pillow - his experiences therein were used in the HBO series THE PACIFIC in which Leckie is one of the major character. Leckie was also a devout Catholic and authored several books on Catholicism including These are My Heroes and American and Catholic. The novel Ordained combines both his love for the Church and the Marine Corps. The experiences of the chaplain are apparently based on true events which he either witnessed or of which he had learned. The manuscript runs 666 pages with corrections throughout. Items were stored for decades in the author's basement and contain a faint musty smell. Otherwise in very good condition. Very good .
