Title: Bibliotheca Graeca Sive Notitia Scriptorum Veterum Graecorum, Vol. One
Description: Hamburg, C. Liebzeit, 1705. First Edition. Leather bound. 689p, engraved title page opposite the main title. Bound in full 18th century vellum. Pages uniformly toned throughout; some old staining to the rear board but generally a sound copy. Text unmarked and complete. The text includes both Greek and Latin printing. The first volume of Fabricius' monumental 14v work. The book carries an interesting provenance. Ownership signature dated 1706 on title page of M. Tobias Koestlin (1679-1725). A Lutheran priest and scholar, he was a graduate of the University of Halle and then a professor at the school's famed Collegium Orientale Theologicum. Bookplate on front pastedown from 1832 of Henry Conwell, the second Bishop of Philadelphia. He was noted for feuding with the laity over control of the local churches to such an extent that he caused a minor schism and was relieved of most of his duties. Bookplate on front pastedown of the Library of St. Athanasius, Nashville Tenn. Dated 1846. This institution no longer exists and has no connection to the current Coptic seminary of the same name in Nashville. Very good .
