Complete with three plates and two maps, although two of the plates for Vol. II are bound in Vol. I. Spines mildly rubbed and worn, front hinge of Vol. I a bit weak. Old signature of "Anna Bland" on title page of first volume else unmarked. Interior clean with some minor age toning to the paper. Overall in very good condition. Howes C324: "the first trustworhty record of life in the United States". Francois de Chastellux (1734-1788) was Fremnch general who fought for the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War, serving as the chief liasion officer between French forces and George Washington. He wrote this account of the new Republic based on his observations during the war. Originally published in French in 1786, this is the first printing of the English translation. .
