William Cardinal O'Connell (1859-1944) was Archbishop of Boston for 38 years. He was appointed a Cardinal in 1911. He was a powerful figure both in the Church and in Massachusetts politics for decades. Known as "Number One", he was a strong conservative voice in American culture during his lifetime. .
