Title-page of the 'Oeuvres melées' printed in red and black. Printer's mark (vignette) on title-page of I, part 1 and II. With some decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Book condition : good. - Good copy of this mixed set of the revised third edition (First work, part 3 in second edition 1694) of the moral orations by Claude Joly (1610-1678), known French orator and bishop of Agen. They were 'estimés' (Hoeffer) at the time and first published 1691-1693. The 'Oeuvres Melées' is in the first and only edition. It contains sermons and is considered as the very last part or complementary publication to the prônes. The prônes, which were edited by Richard after notes taken by hearers of the speeches, concern: part 1: Quinze discours sur la dignité du chrétien et l'excellence de la grâce du baptême... le péché mortel... et le péché véniel, la pénitence... ; part 2: Dix-sept discours sur la malheureuse mort des pécheurs... la bienheureuse mort des justes... le jugement dernier... l'enfer... ; part 3: Seize discours sur le purgatoire... le paradis... l'éternité... le jubilé... Old name & stamp on title-page of part 1 and 3,; titlepage (and possibly some preliminary pages) of part 2 lacking; shelf mark and name on first free endpapers, bookblock of volume 2 broken but firm with calf of spine split; 1 leaf in volume 2 loose; capitals damaged. Despite the defects a servicable and presentable copy of an uncommon work, internally clean. This edition of the 'prônes' not in Bibl.
