Second edition (first 1743) of this early work by Genovesi, Italian professor of ethics and economist. It is divided into four parts, Ontosophy, Cosmosophy, Theosophy, Psychosophy, supplemented by a treatise on ethics and a dissertation on first causes. Ordained priest in 1737, Genovesi went to Naples in 1738 and in 1741 was appointed to teach metaphysics in the university there. He introduced new ideas, particularly those of Locke, Leibniz, and Hume into Italy, and this introduction was bitterly opposed by the scholastics. In his works he strove for a balancing of idealism and sensualism. Contents: Vol. 1: 'Principia ontosophiae & cosmosophiae' preceded by 'Disputatio physico-historica' (84 p.). Vol. 2: 'Principia psychesophiae'. Vol.3: 'Principia theosophiae naturalia'. Vol. 4: 'Principia legis naturalis, & officiorum humanorum' followed by 'Adhortatio ad studia literarum' (16 p.). Old library ticket inside front cover of vol. 1.; covers moderately soiled. Edwards, vol. 3, p. 281; 1 copy of this edition in NCC and in OCLC (LC), nr. 22982845.
