Preachings for Pope Innocent XII by the famous Italian Jesuit preacher Paulo Segneri (1624-1694). He had upto that time with great success preached for and lived with the poor peasants but because of his fame was appointed, much to his regret, theologian at the pompous papal court.Since Savonarola there had been no one more influential on the masses by preaching than Segneri (Michaud, Biogr. Univ., vol 41, p. 450; cfr. Bio-bibl. Kirchenlexikon, Bd. IX). His writings were recommended to students because of their clarity and precision as he deliberately avoided ornamental language. They were translated in many languages; here the third edition of the Latin translation by M. Rassler. The first edition (in Italian) appeared in 1694, the first Latin in 1695, the second 1710.
