He had with great success preached for and lived with the poor peasants but because of his fame was appointed, much to his regret, theologian at the pompous papal court. Since Savonarola there had been no one more influential on the masses by preaching than Segneri His Sermons were published for the first time in Italian 1679 as 'Il Quaresimale' and together with 'La Manna' they are considered his most important works. (Michaud, Biogr. Univ., vol 41, p. 450; cfr. Bio-Bibl. Kirchenlexikon, Bd. IX). His writings were recommended to students because of their clarity and precision as he deliberately avoided ornamental language. They were translated in many languages; of the Sermones alone there are 85 different editions. See: Sommervogel VII (1894) 1050-1089; Hurter II, p. 546v.; Heitjan, Bencard 1176. 1 US copy of this edition in OCLC. Old name and small stamp on first free endpaper, endpaper loosening. Some browning as usual and only minor defects to binding.
