Before he took the religious vows, the ascetical writer baron de Géramb (1777-1848) led quit an adventurous life as man of business and notably in a military career. He resisted a siege of 15 days by the London police that were after him for debts. Later he escaped from Napoleons prison in 1814 to enter the monastery of la Trappe de Port-Salut from which he fled to Switzerland when the order was banned from France. Thereupon he took up a pilgrimage to the Holy Land that aroused much interest at the time and about which he relates in the contemporary prevailing form of letters (First published 1834-1836).
