Both title-pages printed in red & black with printer's mark. Indices. Red letterpiece with gilt lettering and decoration on spine (somewhat faded). With ex-libris and inscribed name of Aloisius Marsuzi. Slightly worn, corners a bit bumped. Some occassional light foxing and waterstaining. Small stamp on half-titles. Book condition : very good. - The 25 almost full page engravings ('Cruciatus sanctorum martyrum tabula') are reproduced after wood-engravings in: Gallonio, De Sanctorum Martyryrum Cruciatibus, bound at the end of volume II. 1 copper engraving ('Instrumenta martyrii') at the end of volume II. 6 full page engravings (out of the text in both volumes) and 5 smaller ones printed throughout were done by Giovanni Maria Cassini. He was a painter, engraver and famous cartographer, active from 1788 to 1805. Prudentius (348-after 405) was born in Spain and one of the most distinguised christian Latin poets. He introduced into Christian poetry the literary hymn, allegorical epic, and Christian ballad. He was of considerable influence in medieval and Renaissance art and poetry. Faustino Arevalo (1747-1824) was a Spanish Jesuit patristic scholar and hymnologist of great renown whose lasting achievement was his definitive edition of the works of St. Isidore, reprinted in Migne. Arevalo's edition of Prudence was also reproduced in Migne's 'Patrologie Latine'.
