Book condition : very good. Very good copy of the scarce first edition of this very accurate concordance on the theological views of the Fathers of the Church by Bernard Maréchal (1705-1770), scholarly monk from the Benedictine congregation of Saint Vanne & Saint Hydulphe. Planned was this work in 4 volumes, but the sale of the first 2 volumes was prohibited because of Maréchal's attitude towards the papal bull Unigenitus directed against Jansenism. Thereupon the author refused to edit the third and fourth volume for print (cf. Hurter). The work presents selections of each father's theological views under comparable thematic headings: 1 'points dogmatiques' (Ecriture saint, dieu, dieu le verbe, resurrection, etc.); 2. 'points de morale': (incredulité, patience, assurance, pureté, douceur des chretiens etc.). This format is chosen to compare views and demonstrate the unity of the various teachings in the early church. When applicable the specific heresies are described against which the Churchfather has opposed. Volume I deals with: Constitutions Apostoliques, Barnabe, pasteur d'Hermas, Clement (Pape), Ignace, Polycarpe, Justin, Athenagore, Theophile, Atien l'Assyrien, Irenée, Clement (d'Alexandrie), Tertullien; Volume II: Tertullien (suite), Minutius Felix, Hippolyte, Origene, Cyprien, Denys d'Alexandrie, Novatien, Gregoire thamaturge, Denis (Pape), Theognoste, Victorin, Pierius, Archelaus. Some wear to spine ends, edges and corners; small library-stamp on first free endpaper; upper right corner of title page in volume 2 torn and sticked to page i; slight browning throughout; Hurter III, p. 46; cf. Graesse IV, p. 388, wrongly lists the 1748 as original edition. Only 1 copy in Dutch central catalog (NCC), 4 US copies in OCLC on-line (nr. 6178322).
