Title: Hermann Göring.

From the publisher : Roger Manvell and Heinrich Fraenkel, the very successful biographers of Doctor Goebbels, have now produced an outstanding study of Hermann Göring, Hitler's Deputy, founder of the Gestapo, Marshal of the Luftwaffe, and Maecenas of the Third Relch. Using the impressions of those who knew him, as well as the mass of public records, they have built up a portrait in depth of a man whose luxurious style of living recalled the magnificence of Imperial Rome, while he connived at the destruction of modern Europe. Brought up in the splendours of a Bavarian castle belonging to his other's Jewish lover, Goring developed at an early age a taste for luxury as well as great skill and physical courage as a mountaineer. He became an air ace in the First World War, after which his intense nationalism and bitterness at the terms of the Treaty of Versailles brought him into contact with Hitler. The wounds he received in the abortive putsch of 1923 led to an addiction to morphine of which he was never cured, and this deeply affected his character. Göring became a man of strange contrasts, brutal in action but good humoured in society, megalomaniac in his display of wealth and jewels, but a man whose intelligence and personal charm did much to make the Nazis seem respectable and their policy plausible during the days of appeasement. Göring's life is an extraordinary tale of a leader corrupted through selfindulgence, opportunism and pandering to his Führer. Roger Manvell's and Heinrich Fraenkel's biography provides a horrifying revelation of what can happen to a human being when the conflict between lust for power and moral cowardice is not resolved.
