Market mechanisms were introduced in the Communist command economies and the income inequality increased. Some social groups benefited more form the market reforms than others. Who were the winners and losers of the market transformation pro cess? This is the leading question of this study. The research presented in this book examines the relationship between market reforms and the income attainment process. A meta-analysis based on Sociological and Economic studies has been used to test the Market Transition Theory and to summarize the current literature. Extracts of 67 cross-sectional surveys from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Slovakia, covering a period from 1984 up to 2002 have been produ ced that contain information on personal and household income, income determinants (employment and occupational status, educational attainment, membership of the Communist Party), and elementary demographics. Trends in the effects of these income determinants have been compared between the five post-Communist societies. ISBN 9789039344712.
