From the publisher : The Zeche Hannibal in Bochum-Hofstede was shut down on March 31, 1973. Several days later Bernd and Hilla Becher began their extensive documentation of this mining complex that was dismantled in 1974. During the year-and-a-half between the closing and the demolition of the mine, they produced the series on the Zeche Hannibal, a detailed photographic documentation of the coal mine in Bochum now being published as a book for the first time. The series consists of eighty-five photographs, subdivided into nineteen groups, each of which is taken from a different vantage point. Not only the entire complex, but the individual buildings on the industrial site have been documented: from the coke towers to the wash house, from the preparation plant to the workshop and the sawdust silos. As one looks at the series of photographs, the individual buildings of the site pass by like a film in a succession of various views: the viewer can, as it were, walk around the buildings. As such the two-dimensional photograph is transposed into the three-dimen sional spatialness of the photographed object. In addition to the typologies, the systematic 'collections' of comparable, separate structures, the documentation of different industrial sites, such as the Zeche Hannibal, has a prominent place within the oeuvre of the Bechers. These series are a supplement and consistent continuation of the work, which is dedicated to the generally anony mous industrial architecture that is being threat ened with demolition throughout the world. This publication came about in connection with the exhibition at Huis Marseille, Foundation for Photography, in Amsterdam. The exhibition was organized by Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne in cooperation with Huis Marseille. The essay contained in this publication has been written by Rudi Fuchs, who at that time, as director of the Stedelijk Van Abbe museum in Eindhoven (1975-1987), purchased the photographic series of the Zeche Hannibal. Rudi Fuchs was also the artistic director of documenta 7 in Kassel (1982) and has been the director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam since 1993. ISBN 9783888149375.
