After a year of continuous and intensive training, the Division went to war. It was the 6th June 1944-D Day. The 6th Airborne Division was part of the British assault on Normandy, its task to seize the vital bridges over the Caen Canal and the River Orne, and to silence the huge guns of the Merville Battery threatening the invasion fleet. In the subsequent break-out and advance to the River Seine, the Division played a major part in ensuring the success of the Normandy campaign. In 1945 it helped to halt the German counter tacks during the 'Battle of the Bulge', played a key role in the Crossing of the Rhine, and took part in the advance to the Baltic. Later, whilst one of its parachute brigades was deployed to South-East Asia, the Division went to Palestine where it helped to uphold the British Mandate until withdrawal in 1948. The 6th Airborne Division was one of the most famous fighting formations of the British Army. Go To It is the gripping account of a story which has not been fully told until now ISBN 9780747508083.
