Book condition : as new. - As an architect, Fritz Block (1889-1955) was one of the main representatives of New Building in Germany. From 1929 he also expressed the impulse of modernity as a photographer and emerged with photographs of technology, nature and people in the style of New Objectivity and New Vision. He also delivered photojournalistic city and travel reports with the Leica from Paris, Marseille and North Africa as well as from the USA in 1931. Because of his Jewish origins, he was barred from working as an architect and from publishing his pictures in Germany from 1933 onwards. However, he continued his photography while traveling abroad. He finally emigrated to the USA in 1938, where he made photography his main profession in Los Angeles. 'Photo-Eye Fritz Block' is the first book about the architect’s photographic work. It ranges from the New Photography of the 1920s in Germany to the color photography of the 1940s in the USA. Above all, the color slide series that Block produced in exile for a progressive art class are a rediscovery, including many photographs of Californian modern architectural buildings.
