Being an important early editor of Edmund Spenser, he is best known for the notes in his 1758 edition of Spenser's great romance epic The Faerie Queene. He also published this Epictetus edition in Greek, witha latin translation, To tou Epiktetou Encheiridion, an edition of Arrian's Epictetus, 1739-41, incorporated by Johann Schweighäuser in his edition of 1799. Volume 1 holds the latin translation below the Greek text; Volume 2 contains the notes on the text. Arrian was a pupil of the stoic Epictetus around 108 AD, and, according to his own account, he was moved to publish Epictetus' lectures, whith his notes, which are known as the Discourses of Epictetus, together with the Enchiridion, a short compendium of all Epictetus' philosophical principles and a summary of the Discourses.
