Good copy of this work so important to a 17th century lawyer's practice, later translated & reprinted many times in Dutch as : Roomsch-Hollands recht. Simon van Leeuwen (1626-1682) gained a wide reputation as lawyer and writer on practical legal issues. He edited a.o. one of the best revisions of the Corpus Juris with commentary by Gothofredus (1663), and a 6 times reprinted book on criminal process law. The Censura-Forensis is a very elaborate work on the relevance of old-Roman law for 17th century contemporary law. It deals with civil law, property law, law of succession, law of contracts and criminal law (Van Heijnsbergen p. 104). Though never highly regarded in Holland, they were translated into the principal European languages and issued in numerous editions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. These treatises were especially influential in South Africa, where they were cited extensively and given a statutory place as a subsidiary authority in the South African Republic of 1859.
