Book condition : very good. - Saint Benedict of Aniane (ca. 747-821), born Witiza and called the Second Benedict, was a Benedictine monk and monastic reformer, who left a large imprint on the religious practice of the Carolingian Empire. His feast day is February 12. He was the head of a council of abbots which in 817 at the Kornelimünster Abbey in Aachen created a code of regulations, or Codex regularum, which would be binding on all the Benedictine houses. Benedict sought to restore the primitive strictness of the monastic observance wherever it had been relaxed or exchanged for the less exacting canonical life. Shortly thereafter, he compiled a Concordia regularum. This edition of the Codex regularum is revised and augmented by Lucas Holstein (1596-1661), German scholar and man of letters. He was librarian in the Household of Cardinal Francesco Barberini (1597-1678) and in 1627 he joined the Cardinal to Rome, taking charge of the rich library at the Palazzo Barberini.
