This edition was enriched with legal and learned notes and preceded by an ingenious and oratorical preface, which was highly appreciated in his time, especially by foreign scholars and widely used as textbook. Incorporated were the notes by Jean Le Clerc taken from the Amsterdam, 1710-edition. Also known as Johannes Clericus (1657-1736), a Genevan theologian and biblical scholar. He was famous for promoting exegesis, or critical interpretation of the Bible. After a conflict with Calvin in 1684, he left Geneva and went to Amsterdam. There he became professor at the Remonstrant Seminarium and teached philosophy, classical literature and hebrew.
