Johannes Castillioneus (1709-1791) was appointed professor extraordinarius at the University of Utrecht in 1751. He taught mathematics, experimental physics and astronomy. In 1755 he was made an ordinary professor in philosophy and mathematics and held this oration at the acceptance of his chair. In this oration he fights the idea that the sciences are interrelated to such a degree that none can be understood without all the other sciences. He became something of a European celebrety and in 1773 he accepted an invitation to become professor of mathematics in Berlin. Bunge. Dictionary of 17th & 18th century Dutch philosophers, p. 202.
