Title: Dirck Volckertsen Coornhert en zijne wellevenskunst. Historiesch - ethische studie.
Description: Amsterdam, Gebroeders Binger, 1860. xci, 232 pp. Later half cloth extra (uncut). With lithographed frontispiece after Goltzius, bibliograhical references and annotated chronological bibliography of works by Coornhert (pp. 187-232) Contains an introduction (xci pp.), the text of the Wellevenskunst (pp. 1-148) and the notes by Ten Brink (pp. 151-186). Interesting association copy as the book has on the half-title the handwritten dedication of the author (Van den Steller) to A.(nna) L.(ouisa) G. (eertruyda) Bosboom-Toussaint. Bosboom-Toussaint (1812-1886) was a known 19th century dutch writer notably of important historical novels. Born in Alkmaar, her parents were Huguenots but she was raised by her Grandmother in the Dutch town Harlingen. She was especially sensitive for the hardships of religious controversies on which she wrote, intolerance and discord, which is interesting in the context of this book on Coornhert, champion of tolerance. The author Jan Ten Brink (1834-1901) was professor for literature at the University of Leiden and writer of numerous works and literary criticism. He wrote a.o. a doctoral thesis on Coornhert (in Latin Utrecht 1860) and a history of Dutch literature (1897). He compiled for A.L.G. Bosboom Toussaint in 1882 a liber amicorum and wrote in 1886 in 92 pages her necrology. They knew eachother as members of the literary circle in The Hague at the end of the 19th century. Text in Dutch. Dedication faded but readable, library marks on preliminaries, 2 small tickets to spine, some foxing, some occasional annotations in pencil, waterstain at bottom of title-page and frontispiece, else very good. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good.
