Henri Benjamin Hartog [1869-1904] was a Dutch man of letters, jewish born socialist and deeply concerned with the living conditions and the fate of the working class people in the Dutch town Schiedam. After his premature death publisher Brusse, with whom Hartog was befriended, brought together his stories and the incomplete novel Buurtleven in this volume under the title Sjofelen. After being forgotten for some time, it was reprinted in 1994. Very slight wear to binding, small stamp on endpaper and title-page, else very good, solid and clean.
