In 1902 he published Der moderne Kapitalismus in 2 volumes, later augmented by a third volume in the 6th edition of 1927. In this work Sombart attributed the emergence of industrial capitalism to the growth of the 'spirit' of rationalism and acquisitiveness within the womb of feudal society and predicted that capitalism would inevitable give way to socialism.
