By a careful study of Scripture, the Fathers, and the Orations of Cicero, he had prepared himself for the pulpit, for which he had ever felt a strong attraction. He preached at first in the great cathedrals, and then for twenty-seven years (1665-92) gave popular missions with an eloquence surpassed only by his holiness. After St. Bernadine of Siena and Savanarola, Segneri was Italy's greatest orator. Entire districts flocked to hear him; extraordinary graces and favours marked his career. This work contains devotional excercices and is intended as a meditation manual - food for the soul - for every day of the year. It was first published 1673-80 in Bologna in 4 volumes as 'La manna dell'anima', this is the second (or third?) Latin edition (first 1699). Segneri's writings, translations and excepts included, comprise some 600 titles, of which 70 versions of La Manna dell'anima alone, one of the main works, in more than 300 volumes. Surprisingly we only find 1 copy of this edition in OCLC; 7 copies in German KvK. Small stamp and name on first fly-leaf. Cf. Michaud, Biogr. Univ., vol 41, p. 450; Bio-Bibl. Kirchenlexikon, Bd. IX). See: Sommervogel VII (1894) 1050-1089; Hurter II, p. 546v.;
