Meropius Pontius Anicius Paulinus sprang from a distinguised family of senators in Bordeaux. Before 381 he was Consul suffectus in Rome and became governor of Campania about 379. He was converted to christianity after Saint Martin of Tours had healed a disease of his eye. In 409 he was elected bishop of Nola. A first edition of his works, not very estimated, appeared in Paris 1516. Our 1736 edition is edited by Ludovico Muratori (1672-1750), one of the foremost scholars of his age, and based on the excellent 1685 version by Le Brun des Marettes. This text was reprinted later by Migne. Paulinus is known for his correspondance with Christian celebrities like Augustin, Hieronymus, Martin of Tours, Sulpicius Severus, Anastasius I, all letters included in this edition (part I). His letters have been of continuous interest and have been translated until today. His poetry has historical and literary interest because it reflects the contemporary tension between pagan (poetical forms) and christian culture (part II). The third part of this edition contains 'opera dubia, aliena, supposititia'. Vellum damaged on spine in 3 compartments and capitals. Marginal worming in a few pages; Small library stamp on first halftitle. Paper somewhat wrinkled. Graesse, V, p. 171; 1 US copy in OCLC
