Book condition : very good. Jakob Masen (1606-1681), Belgian Jesuit who taught rhetorics and poetics at several universities throughout Germany. Erudite and prolific writer, this work, according to Hurter, was one of his most powerful, apologetic works. Masen takes an orthodox position in the newly arising theological and biblical hermeneutical controversies of the seventeenth century. These centered often around the role of the tradition, notably Augustine and his covenant theology, in comparison to the principle of sola sciptura. Cocceius epochal work in this field dates from 1648. Hurter II, 376v; de Backer II, 1134; Biogr.-Bibliogr. Kirchenlex. V, 971-973; Not in Bibl. Catholica Neerlandica Impressa 1500-1727; Not in OCLC.
