Third but first illustrated edition of Stoke's mediaeval rhyming chronicle (885-1305), edited, with additions, by Cornelis Van Alkemade. The work is known for its exactitude and minute detail and it has proved of inestimable service to later historians. The fine series of full-length portraits of the reigning princes of Holland were engraved after paintings in the Carmelite Monastery at Haarlem. According to the editor, the portraits of Philip of Austria, Emperor Charles V, and Philip II of Spain were omitted as they were not present in the Haarlem series on which the plates were based but were only added to complete the list of rulers.; the portrait of Jan III was never executed for unknown reasons.
