Description: 1849. 2 items, engraved and embossed card, 330 x 250 mm. and handbill, 215 x 165 mm. a little chipped and mounted on thin card. An invitation for the opening of the New Coal Exchange, one of the first substantial buildings constructed of cast iron. Despite Nicolas Pevsner declaring it "...among the twelve irreplaceable buildings of 19th century England... It expresses an era of urban revolution as no other surviving building is capable of doing... The Coal Exchange is a national monument in the fullest sense of the phrase, and its destruction would be unforgivable," it was nevertheless demolished in 1962 in order to widen Lower Thames Street, in "one of the great conservationist horror stories" [Hermione Hobhouse].
