Fortey bought the Catnach Press in the late 1840s and printed and published at 2 & 3 Monmouth Court, Bloomsbury until the 1880s. He was one "of the industrious crew of low-class jobbing printers operating in Seven Dials" producing chapbooks, broadsides, street ballads and other cheap items for the hawkers and street vendors of London.
