Title: A View of the Splendid Illumination at M. Otto's House in Portman Square on the Evening of the Proclamation of Peace April 29 1802.
Description: Warner, Sold by Tomkins, May 12, 1802. Hand coloured etching with aquatint, 390 x 280 mm. imprint cropped from bottom edge. A rare print showing the decorative illuminations on the facade of the house of Louis-Guillaume Otto, Minister Plenipotentiary to England, who forged the outline agreement for the Treaty of Amiens, celebrated here, which marked the end of the French Revolutionary Wars. The peace was short-lived, lasting only a year before hostilities commenced with the seizure of Dutch and French merchant ships in Britain and the surrounding waters on 17th May 1803 marking the start of the Napoleonic Wars.
