Title: The Way to Fortune.
Description: [1862?] Lithographic cartoon, 320 x 250 mm. A satirical cartoon representing John Bramley-Moore as slave owner, beating one of his slaves. John Bramley-Moore is best known as a Liverpudlian businessman, town councillor, alderman and Lord Mayor as well as M.P. for Maldon. After he lost that seat in 1859, he stood for Lincoln in 1862. It was during this campaign that the origins of his wealth were examined. He spent some years in Brazil where much of his wealth was acquired by slave worked exports and illicit slave trading> accusations which he denied but which are now known to be true. An account of his links to slavery can be seen in this article by Dr. Joe Mulhern: https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/latamcaribbean/2021/02/24/evertons-new-bramley-moore-stadium-is-a-stark-reminder-of-liverpools-historic-entanglement-with-slavery-in-brazil/
