Field Marshall Hugh Gough, Viscount Gough [1779 - 1869] had already distinguished himself in the Peninsular Wars and the First Opium War before being appointed Commander in Chief, India during which time he defeated the Marathas in the Gwalior Campaign and then the Sikhs in the First and Second Anglo-Sikh Wars.
