Author: THE WRECK OF THE "MAHABLESHWUR" Title: Sufferings of the Crew. Narrative of Mr. James Hawkins, First Mate. [of the Maha Buleshwar]
Description: [Bombay?]: [Bombay Gazette?], [1880] Broadside, 480 x 245 mm. Rather browned and a little chipped. Inscribed on the upper margin "With best complements from Capt. Gausebrook, ship "Benefactress" late of her sister ship the ill-fated "Mahableshwur". Gachin, Malaba Coast & Indies. We are now loading general cargo for London & will sail on the 15 (Oct) & expect to arrive there on the 1st December All's well. 1880." The barque was wrecked at Ancutta, Laccadive Islands on 15th June 1880. Six of her crew were rescued from a boat on 17 August by the steamship Madura ( United Kingdom). Twelve of her crew were rescued from Bingaroo on 26 August by the steamship Ash ( United Kingdom). Maha Buleshwar was on a voyage from Bombay, India to London. This seems to be one of the first reports, printed from the [Bombay?] Gazette, prior to the report of the second rescue. Not the Jim Hawkins from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.
