Description: 1870. Card 120 x 80 mm. with original mounted photograph printed gold on black, together with single printed sheet 260 x 205 mm. The Captain foundered in a storm on 7th. September, 1870 with the loss of her entire crew of 506 men. She was a turret warship of innovative design, but the central heavily protected rotating turret required a low freeboard in order to operate effectively. In the Captain, it was particularly low, and the centre of gravity high, which are thought to have resulted in the loss of the ship. The designer of the ship and inventor of the turret, Captain Cowper Coles, was one of the dead.
