Description: 1900. Card, printed one side only. "A boating disaster occurred off Brighton yesterday afternoon, by which four men belonging to HMS Desperate lost their lives, while two others are unaccounted for. The incident was caused by the swamping of a whaler in which twelve men were proceeding from Desperate to the West Pier, a distance of about 250 yards. The names of the four men whose bodies have been recovered are G. Smith, C.P. Fennar, J. Stewart and H. Hailstone." Beverley Advertiser. Incorrectly named H.M.S. Dispatch on the card, the funeral of the seven men lost was attended by an estimated 20 - 30 thousand spectators who lined the roads to Brighton cemetery.
