The Sebastopol Committee was set up by the House of Commons to look at the conditions of the British Army during the conflict following calls led by the radical M.P. John Roebuck. Lord Aberdeen's government interpreted this as a vote of no confidence and resigned. Sidney Herbert, the Member for South Wilts, had been responsible for the War Office during the Crimean War and was blamed by some for the starvation of the soldiers. He had been instrumental in getting Florence Nightingale to lead a team of nurses out to the Crimea.
