Field Marshal Haratio Herbert Kitchener [1850 - 1916] was a senior British army officer noted for his part in the Boer War and the Sudan campaigns where he is credited for winning the Battle of Omdurman for which he was made Lord Kitchener of Khartoum. He became Secretary of State for War in 1914 and as one of the few to foresee a long war, he organised the largest voluntary army that Britain had ever seen featuring prominently on the famous "Your Country Needs You" recruitment posters. On his way to attend negotiations in Russia with Tsar Nicholas II, his ship, the armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire, struck a German mine off the west coast of Orkney and sank with the loss of 737 lives including Kitchener and his entire entourage. Only 17 men survived.
